This summer, I’m aiming to take advantage of the rare confluence of a job with a good amount of holiday allowance, and the fact I’m earning, to do quite a bit this summer.

The plans so far are:

• 28th May-3rd June: Trip to Vienna and Bratislava.
• 2nd-11th July: Dolomites 5 Days (JWOC Spectator Races) in Trento, Italy. Unfortunately clashes with the State of the Map conference in Amsterdam.
• 17th-26th July: One possible week for a Thurso-London 1400km bike ride I’m planning.
• 2nd-8th August: Scottish 6 Days, this time near Perth.
• September & October are looking like great months for City Race orienteering – London, Oxford, Cambridge and Chester are all planned for that time.
• 6th-16th November: San Francisco Golden Gate Getaway.

I’m on the lookout for the most dramatic viaducts you can cycle or walk across, in the UK. A bit of Googling hasn’t revealed a definitive list, so I’m building up on here – suggestions welcome.

So far, I know about:

• Howsgill Viaduct, near Consett in County Durham. 50m high, 210m long.
• Thornton Viaduct, near Bradford. 40m high, 120m long.
• Headstone Viaduct, near Bakewell in the Peak District. 15m high, 90m long.
• Larpool Viaduct, near Whitby in North Yorkshire. 60m high, 320m long.
• Bilston Glen Viaduct, near Bonnyrigg in Midlothian. 50m high, 130m long.
• Lambley Viaduct, near Haltwhistle in County Durham. 30m high, 260m long.
• Smardale Gill Viaduct, near Kirkby Stephen in the Pennines. 40m high, 220m long.
• Leaderfoot Viaduct, near Melrose in the Scottish Borders. 40m high, 250m long.
• Cefn Coed Viaduct, near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. 35m high, 220m long.
• Hewenden Viaduct, near Bradford. 35m high, 340m long.
• Blaen Y Cwm Viaduct, near Trawsfynydd in Wales.
• Hengoed Viaduct, near Strad Mynach in Wales. 35m high, 260m long.
• Hockley Viaduct, near Winchester. 10m high, 610m long.
• Firth Viaduct, near Penicuik. 20m high, 100m long.
